Nataka Books Reviews:

My Mercedes is Bigger than Yours

"Once upon a time, a young man was savouring the pleasures of a new car!" goes  the first line in Nkem Nkwakwo's classic. Raw, energetic and propulsively funny !

The plot is unpretentious: a young man with a good degree and a good job thinks it is time he got himself a status symbol to match his position, a Jaguar, or not? The writing by Nkem is succint and conveys a Lagos on the move, living and full of life ! One of our favourite books.

My Mercedes is Bigger than Yours

"Once upon a time, a young man was savouring the pleasures of a new car!" goes  the first line in Nkem Nkwakwo's classic. Poetic, energetic and endlessly funny !

The plot is unpretentious: a young man with a good degree and a good job thinks it is time he got himself a status symbol to match his position, a Jaguar. Everyone in his village calls it a Mercedes to which he does not object. Cue, sharing of palm wine, breaking of the cola nut, meeting all the neighbours who have come to view the new car and friends and girls in the City who all want a piece of Onuma.

This is simply one of the funniest books I have ever read to be enjoyed a few times every year. The car eventually breaks down and is left on the side of the road whilst Onuma seeks help. He returns to find his mercedes not looking quite like the one he left and he stumbles from place to place dealing with the fallout ! The writing by Nkem is short, succint and conveys a Lagos on the move, living and full of life !
